The Connecticut Sun have announced that Asjha Jones is expected to miss the 2014 WNBA season due to an Achilles injury, in what could be interpreted as an unfair twist of fate for a veteran forward.

"We are saddened to hear of Asjha's injury," Sun Vice President and General Manager Chris Sienko said. "She took off a considerable amount of time to nurse her injuries so it seems unfair. However, we know Asjha to be strong and determined and hopefully she will be afforded another opportunity to play the game she loves in the future."

Jānis Kacēns of LoveWomensBasketball has video of the injury itself along with some details about her statistics thus far this season in Russia. As already described by John Altavilla of the Hartford Courant, the left Achilles tendon has been a long-term problem for Jones and "...after the firing of Mike Thibault, who was replaced with Anne Donovan, Jones decided to sit out the 2013 season."

The implications for this injury are probably pretty obvious: the Sun now have a hole on their roster at power forward and the #1 pick in a draft featuring 6-foot-3 Stanford forward Chiney Ogwumike. Sometimes drafting for need with the top pick can be a recipe for disaster; the Sun would appear to be in a position where many people's top prospect seems to be a perfect fit.
