Women's basketball analyst Debbie Antonelli breaks down Natasha Howard's offensive game (via ACC Digital Network).

Florida State star Natasha Howard was named to the Head Coaches All-ACC First team and ACC All-Defensive team yesterday and Seminoles.com described the impressive statistical profile that justifies the selections.

Howard has enjoyed a senior season for the ages, averaging 21.2 points, 9.3 rebounds while shooting 60.3 percent. According to the latest NCAA statistics, Howard is one of just six players in the nation shooting above 60 percent from the floor.

The Toledo, Ohio, native recently earned a spot on the ACC Women's Basketball Championship All-Tournament Team. In FSU's second-round matchup against Miami, she recorded her 40th career double-double with 30 points and 16 rebounds in an important 72-67 overtime victory. She followed that up with 29 points on 14-of-22 shooting facing constant double teams against No. 1 seed Notre Dame.

And if you're looking for one game to pull up from the archives as particularly exemplary of what Howard offers as a WNBA draft prospect, that last 83-57 loss to Notre Dame in the ACC Tournament on Friday might be it.

Bear in mind that Howard had just 11 points on 5-for-13 shooting in her first meeting against Notre Dame, in part due to not getting the ball in the post when she was open (an epidemic problem in women's college basketball) and in part due to her own inability to establish position on the block.

Part of what made that last game impressive was the variety of moves that she has in her repertoire, which she discussed in the video above with Debbie Antonelli. But two things that really stood out - both in the game and in Antonelli's breakdown - about Howard are her decisiveness and how good Howard is as a scorer when facing up.

Early in the season, her decisiveness sometimes seemed to skew toward rigidity as she'd go into her move: she would rely heavily on a really nice crossover from the wing, get stuck in a bad position, and find herself out of position to make a play. Against Notre Dame on Friday, she just looked like a more patient yet still decisive player who had a better feel for what to when she got the ball - against the slower Natalie Achonwa, her quick first step allowed her to find decent looks even as the entire Irish defense keyed in on her.

Howard has athleticism that even the nation's elite defenses struggle to contain. However, these two games against Notre Dame might also reveal two areas of improvement that could make Howard an even more elite prospect.

In the first game, she struggled to score for the reasons noted above: she wasn't able to fight with Notre Dame's bigs to establish position. In the second game, she only had five rebounds and got primarily those boards that she could find by out jumping others. As a slender 6-foot-3 player, the combination suggests a weakness that people have long been aware of: competing against stronger players in the post as someone who was lauded for her perimeter skills as a college recruit.

There are two ways to look at Howard's balance of weaknesses and phenomenal statistics: the pessimistic perspective would be to say that she won't be nearly the player she is now once she's up against WNBA competition. The optimistic perspective, and the way that I suspect WNBA general managers are looking at it, is that Howard has enormous upside: with her combination of athleticism, length, and an outstanding post-up game she could develop into a devastating pro power forward with an improved back-to-the-basket game and some strength.

Highlights from Maryland's loss to North Carolina in which star Alyssa Thomas became the program's all-time leading scorer.

From the "in case you missed it" files, Alyssa Thomas became Maryland's all-time leading in a loss to North Carolina, despite not quite getting the outcome she wanted.

SB Nation's Testudo Times has both a summary of her scoring accomplishments in addition to analysis of the unfortunate loss to North Carolina by Todd Carton.

For all of their problems, the Terps had chances to make key plays down the stretch that might have led to them overcoming all the errors. The Terps held Carolina without a field goal for the last 4:52 of the game...The final missed chance came when DeVaughn rebounded Walker-Kimbrough's miss muscling it away from a Tar Heel defender. The Terps called timeout and got the ball into Thomas' hands but the senior dribbled into trouble and turned the ball over as the defense collapsed around her.

So, on the night when she became Maryland women's basketball's all time leading scorer, Thomas will have to take solace in the fact that her career isn't quite over.

This really isn't going to hurt Maryland much in terms of tournament seeding, but it did put a damper on Thomas' accomplishment.

Thankfully, we'll have at least one more chance to see her this season in the 2014 NCAA Tournament.

Tournament MVP Jewell Loyd scored 26 points while teammate Kayla McBride scored 25 to lead the Fighting Irish to the ACC title in their first appearance.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Notre Dame used a 21-4 run out of the second half gate to build a double-digit lead they would never relinquish, vanquishing Duke 69-53 to claim their first ACC title.

Jewell Loyd scored 26 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Fighting Irish, earning Most Valuable Player honors for the tournament. Backcourt mate Kayla McBride added 25 and earned a spot on the All-Tournament first team. Duke, for its part, never could find an answer for Notre Dame's sublime guard play.

"They're a terrific team," Duke coach Joanne P. McCallie said. "And we didn't do much with McBride and Loyd - much of anything defensively - there. Between not finding them at times and the turnovers, that cost us a little bit."

More: Full coverage, photo galleries of the 2014 ACC tournament

Notre Dame, as North Carolina associate head coach Andrew Calder said Saturday night, executes at a very high level and continued to impose their will despite the game being deadlocked at 28 at the half. Duke appeared rushed at times in the second half, leading to an uncharacteristic 20 turnovers (13 in the second half). The Irish were credited with 10 steals, and scored 23 points off the Duke miscues.

"The turnovers cannot happen," McCallie lamented following the game. "We have to slow down and stop trying to go at a certain speed. I was disappointed at us in the second half. The second half turnovers were horrific."

Duke played as well as any Irish opponent all year in the first half, despite McBride's 15 points. Haley Peters and Elizabeth Williams both had 10 points at the break, and the Blue Devil defense had forced eight Notre Dame turnovers. That all changed in the second half, when Loyd hit three straight baskets, two of them three-pointers.

Suddenly, what had been a nip-and-tuck championship was well on its way to just another win for the undefeated Fighting Irish.

"I was really pleased with the second half," Irish head coach Muffet McGraw said after the win. "I thought we came out of the locker room and had kind of a renewed energy. I thought we played our game. I thought we played a little bit harder."

McBride was sporting a championship cap and one of the nets from the Greensboro Coliseum baskets during the postgame press conference, but there was little excitement exhibited by the victors on the dais. There was little doubt that the victory was the expected result on their way to a Final Four and possibly, a national title.

"I think it's good for us going into the NCAAs, it's good momentum," McBride said. "But I think we know what are goals are, we know what are expectations are and this was one of them. We're just trying to go on to the next one and take it game by game."

Perhaps the most glaring line on the final box score was the one belonging to Duke senior Tricia Liston. Liston managed just four points on 11 shots, blanketed and frustrated all night by Irish defenders. However, her one "off" night of the tournament did not keep her off the All-Tournament first team along with teammate Williams.

"They really went after (Liston) and they did a great job," McCallie said. "My heart goes out to her. Three charges, I've never seen that before by Tricia. I don't think she's had three charges in her career prior to this game."

In the end, it was Notre Dame's guards that owned the day for the 2014 ACC Tournament championship. The 51 points and 11 rebounds for Loyd and McBride were just more of the same for the Fighting Irish. They will be a number one seed for the NCAA Tournament, and it will be interesting to see (if it gets that far) if Connecticut can match Notre Dame's focus and intensity.

"I thought Jewell and McBride were just unstoppable. The second half Jewell had a stretch where she took over and did so many great things. And Kayla is so dependable all year long, so steady, so consistent. We got some stops, we got the break going, and I thought our transition game really took off in the second half."

Writing the phrase "Notre Dame, ACC" looks, sounds, and feels deeply, soul-wrenchingly wrong.

Who? The Irish of Notre Dame.

What? There are many stories explaining the name. There are fewer explaining the leprechaun.

Where? South Bend, Indiana, the hub of Michiana.

When? March 9th, in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Why? They won the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.

How? Notre Dame broke open a game that had been tied at the half and ran away with a 69-53 win over Duke. Kayla McBride had 15 of her 25 points in the first half; Jewell Loyd had 18 of her game-high 26 in the second half.

Surprise? Predicted to finish second in the conference by both the blue ribbon panel and the coaches, they ended up in first and undefeated in conference, four games clear of Duke and Maryland.

RPI: 1

SOS: 6

Record: 32-0 (16-0 ACC)

Good wins: At Tennessee.

Bad losses: Muffet McGraw's sanity regarding the attractiveness of lime green. Certainly nothing on the court.

Who's running this show? Muffet McGraw, since 1987. Is it awkward at all that her son went to Indiana?

Extra, Extra! The South Bend Tribune.

Skylar who? The Irish have come back even stronger from the graduation of the acclaimed point guard, on the backs of seniors Natalie Achonwa (14.3 points, 7.4 rebounds) and Kayla McBride (17.3 points, 3.8 assists) and super sophomore Jewell Loyd (team-high 18.3 points, 6.2 rebounds).

Random things that may only intrigue me: Michaela Mabrey's three-point shooting (41.7%), the remarkably even distribution of steals across the top eight in the rotation- eight players with at least 20, led by Loyd's 57. The Irish get it done both offensively and defensively, with authority, and against the best.

Diamond DeShields' three-pointer rimmed out and put Duke in the ACC Tournament final, where they will face undefeated Notre Dame (7 p.m. EST, ESPN).

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Duke needed four clutch free throws at the end of their matchup with North Carolina while Notre Dame rolled N.C. State to advance to the finals of the 2014 ACC Women's Basketball Tournament.

Undefeated Notre Dame went unscathed through the ACC regular season, including two wins over Duke, and will be a top seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

The Fighting Irish needed little time to dispatch N.C. State in the first semifinal, eventually blowing out the Wolfpack 83-48. The Wolfpack were without All-ACC honoree Markeisha Gatling, who left Friday's quarterfinal with a knee injury. That left Kody Burke and the rest of her teammates to find a way to stay with the Irish on very short notice. The Irish smelled blood and attacked right away, building a 22-6 lead in the first 10:20, and Notre Dame never looked back.

Jewell Loyd (16 points) and Kayla McBride (10 points) had a permanent seat on the Irish bench before the 14-minute mark of the second half, with the rest of the starters soon to depart, as well. Notre Dame out-rebounded the outmanned Wolfpack 47-30, scoring 21 second chance points. The Irish were credited with 10 steals, four alone for Kayla McBride.

"It's the best we've ever had," Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw said of her bench. "I think we have great depth with Michaela Mabrey. She's having a great year. I thought she was the best sixth man in the country this year. It's great to rest your starters and be confident in your bench."

N.C. State was led by Miah Spencer's 11 points, but were subdued from the outset by the Notre Dame defense. The talented Burke managed just four points on eight attempts. Each attempt at an entry pass to the post was an adventure, as the Irish were determined to deny the Wolfpack's inside game. The Pack fared no better from the perimeter, making just four of 20 three-point attempts.

"It was tough, you know, even to run some of our stuff," Wolfpack coach Wes Moore said. "We had people out of position and different things. So it was a rough day. Again, that's life. We learned a lot today, I'm sure."

The night's second semifinal between Duke and North Carolina was the main attraction for most of the blue-clad throng in the arena, and was less a game than it was a defensive clinic. Duke shot 43.1 percent from the floor while holding the Tar Heels to 33.8 percent, but it took a late rally by the Devils to finally beat the Heels 66-61.

"North Carolina is a very, very good team," Duke coach Joanne P. McCallie said. "We didn't really do much to stop their primary go-to's. But we worked hard to, we tried to. And we tried to be aware and alert and make things difficult, if we could."

Tricia Lison led the Blue Devils with 17 points, including three three-pointers. Elizabeth Williams chipped in with 12 points and nine rebounds before fouling out with 34 seconds remaining. Enter Duke freshman Oderah Chidom, who had not been a factor before checking in for the final seconds.

"Well, O is a funny character, she really doesn't get phased by a lot," Duke forward Haley Peters said of Chidom. "She's confident in herself and she just went up there and hit four free throws in a row and really won the game at the end of the game."

The Tar Heels were once again led by freshman sensation Diamond DeShields, who scored 25 points and came just millimeters from adding three more, as her shot with 11 seconds remaining popped out and into Chidom's waiting arms. Fellow freshmen Allisha Gray (14 points, 7 rebounds) and Stephanie Mavunga (13 points, 9 rebounds) also were in double figures for the Tar Heels in a losing effort. North Carolina's defense forced 17 Duke turnovers but the Heels didn't take advantage, scoring only 14 points off the miscues. However, DeShields and Associate Head Coach Andrew Calder placed the blame on rebounding.

"I thought overall in the game we gave good effort," Calder said. "I do not like the fact that they out-rebounded us, and I thought that was the difference in the game."

DeShields concurred, after being asked if she saw a different Duke team than the one she'd played against in the previous two meetings.

"No, I didn't," she said. "It was a different North Carolina team as far as rebounding went. We didn't crash the boards like we should have."

Duke's victory sets up a third showdown between the Irish and Blue Devils. The Irish took the first two meetings, a 88-67 win in Durham and a 81-70 decision in South Bend. Perhaps the best assessment of how Duke might fare in their third meeting with the Irish was made by Calder, when asked for a championship prediction:

"What Notre Dame brings to the league is what Connecticut did for Notre Dame. Connecticut taught Notre Dame you've got to execute. You've got to be able to score. And this is a league that's been more defensive dominated, athletic and defensive dominated. And Notre Dame brings to the game precision, excellent precision on the offensive end, and good position defense."
