All the statistical ratings that have published predictions are predicting the Duke Blue Devils to not only beat the Wake Forest Demon Deacons but win big tonight on senior night.

And it's clear why: they're one of the top 10 offenses in the nation, buoyed by a nation-high three point percentage of 41.9%, and they lead the ACC in opponents' field goal percentage during conference play.

Yet the one thing that could undermine the predictions is their lack of a point guard - more specifically, the lack of a real point guard rotation of any type at all.

Following the news on Monday that sophomore point guard Alexis Jones would be out for the remainder of the season with an ACL injury, we learned during the week that reserve point guard Chloe Wells is no longer with the team (under mysteriously odd circumstances). With senior Chelsea Gray's career already having ended due to a knee injury, the Blue Devils find themselves navigating an end-of-season run - with the ACC and NCAA tournaments looming - without a natural point guard.

Tonight we get to see how effective their point guard by committee approach is when Duke hosts Wake Forest tonight, might help us begin to answer some key questions about how they navigate the path forward.

How will the point guard by committee approach affect the offense?

You'll be forgiven if you don't really know much about who Ka'lia Johnson is - she has played just 24 minutes in the last four games and averages 9.7 minutes per game in her career. More specifically to the point of her readiness to assume major point guard minutes, Johnson, who was just the second person to be named an All-Metro first team four times in four years as a high school point guard, has recorded just 6 assists to 19 turnovers thus far this season (an assist to turnover ratio of 0.31).

Jackson and Liston already play larger roles on the team, but neither of them has an assist-to-turnover ratio greater than 1.0 either - Jackson only averages one assist per game. In other words, Duke won't even have an efficient ball handler on the roster entering tonight's game. For a team with strengths of spotting up to shoot threes and getting the ball into the post with Elizabeth Williams, it would certainly be reasonable to expect a drop-off in offensive efficiency. That drop-off might manifest itself on the surface of the box score in the form of turnovers: Duke is already eighth in the conference in turnover rate during conference play thus far, according to WBB State, and that's with Jones in the lineup. Without her in the lineup, just getting into her offense could be a challenge if teams apply pressure.

Fortunately for Duke, Wake Forest isn't a team that forces a lot of turnovers but it's something worth watching in today's game.

How will the change affect the defense?

Perhaps the bigger issue for Duke is on the defensive end, especially with the way fouls are being called on the perimeter this season.

While Duke has been the second-rated defense in conference play, according to WBB State, the now-injured Jones had been playing nearly 40 minutes with the exception of blowout wins. They'll now not only have to replace her ballhandling offensively, but also her ability to pressure on the other end. Jackson is capable of applying pressure and forcing turnovers, but the question moving forward might be how they respond to quicker guards and whether trying to keep up will result in increased fouling.

If there is a silver lining in all of this, it might be that Liston will have an opportunity to showcase the range of her skills for WNBA scouts on both ends of the floor: she has already been picking up some of the ball-handling slack in Gray's absence; now we'll see if she can do that over the course of a full game and lead a team through the tournament(s) by picking up some of the slack defensively as well.

How will all of this affect Duke's tournament standing? As of Monday, both Charlie Creme of ESPN and Steven Bell of the S-Factor had the Blue Devils as a #2 seed, which makes sense given what they've done thus far this season. But what happens if Duke drops these last two games and then struggles in the 2014 ACC Tournament?

Hypothetically, losing to Wake Forest - a team with a RPI of 106 - would be damaging to Duke's selection sheet on its own. But a loss to Wake coupled with a loss to surging North Carolina in the final game of the ACC regular season could be disastrous: the would leave Duke at 11-5 in conference play and at risk of missing out on one of the coveted double byes in the ACC Tournament. Duke couldn't beat UNC at home with Jones; their chances of doing so without Jones are slim.

Predictions

Even if Duke has a bit of a drop-off, they should be expected to win this one. Listed below are what the statistics say, but leave your predictions for this or any of today's games in the comments.

Sagarin: Duke +24.84

Massey: Duke +23

Omni Rankings: Duke +24

Fortunately, the most likely scenario for Duke probably does include them getting a double bye as one of the top four teams in the conference no matter what.

North Carolina is playing Notre Dame in South Bend today - a loss would leave them at 11-6 at the very least, no matter what else happens. N.C. State then gets Notre Dame on the final day of conference play - a loss would leave them at 11-5 and the Blue Devils has the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Wolfpack. So a win today would go a long way to helping Duke secure the second seed in the conference tournament. And that should help them maintain their spot as a top seed in the tournament, barring a hot streak by other candidates: getting the byes in the ACC Tournament prevents them from suffering a damaging upset if they were to draw a bad match up and, most of all, some more time to figure things out with the roster they have.

Although McCallie told the Duke Chronicle she doesn't "think [seeding is] very relevant", winning tonight's game is significant insofar as it will help them avoid any major damage to their NCAA Tournament selection sheet.

Wells’ last game with Duke was January 19 vs. Virginia Tech and she has not been traveled with the team recently. Up until Duke's recent loss at Notre Dame the team's game notes indicated that Wells had been "...missing the last six games with a shin injury...". As of the Notre Dame game, that statement was reduced to read that Wells had been "missing the last seven games..." without any indication of an injury. Sources informed Swish Appeal earlier this week that she was in fact no longer on the team rather than being shut down due to shin splints.

It has already been a really difficult year for the Blue Devils as they lost one guard to transfer (Kianna Holland) and then lost their two point guards - Chelsea Gray and Alexis Jones - to season-ending injuries. With Wells no longer with the team, Duke is left in a precarious situation at the point guard position. They will probably lean heavily on senior forward Tricia Liston - who has also assumed increased ball handling responsibilities since Gray's absence - to handle ball handling duties going forward,

Wells was noted for her exceptional three-point shooting - shooting 42.3% in 19 games this season - solid ball handling and grit. She was averaging 3.7 points per game in 11.1 minutes per game.

With Duke facing North Carolina tonight and the additions made to the Wade Watch List, we take focus on the role of Tricia Liston in helping the Blue Devils deal with Chelsea Gray's absence.

Duke Blue Devils (22-2) vs. North Carolina Tar Heels (29-7)

WBB State preview statistics

Duke and UNC is always an exciting college basketball rivalry, but tonight's game also has implications for what's shaping up to be "a compelling race" for a top seed in the 2014 NCAA Tournament, as described by ESPN's Charlie Creme:

...a Blue Devils loss to North Carolina on Big Monday (ESPN2 and WatchESPN, 7 p.m. ET) could put the Cardinals back on the top line. The margins just might be that narrow for the next month... although both Cardinals losses were on the road, Duke's losses, even against the nation's best, were at home. This is why the margin between the two is so small. It might come down to viewing who the Blue Devils are now versus who they were before Chelsea Gray's season-ending knee injury. At this point, it's too soon to make an absolute determination whether Duke has lost anything tangible.

To Creme's point about injured Duke point guard Chelsea Gray, how Duke deals with her absence tonight might be pretty significant.

UNC is an uptempo team that is top 10 in the nation in forcing opponent turnovers this season (28% turnover rate), according to WBB State; Duke is a more turnover prone team (21.9%, 12th in the ACC) with one of the most efficient offenses in the nation. Duke's loss to Notre Dame was an example of how those numbers can play out: although Duke ultimately won that turnover battle for the game, Duke had 10 of their 16 turnovers in the second half as Notre Dame pulled away to win by an 88-67 margin.

To Creme's point, Gray's absence might not have made any tangible impact on their won/loss record, but there's little question that having Gray's ball handling efficiency against Notre Dame would have helped keep them in the game.

The players responsible for picking up that ball handling slack in Gray's absence have been sophomore Alexis Jones and senior Tricia Liston, both of whom were among the 10 players added to the 2014 Wade Watch list to give Duke four representatives on the list. Jones was an integral part of Duke's Elite Eight run after Gray's injury last season, but Liston's contributions this season are particularly noteworthy given her improvement.

Liston currently leads Duke in minutes, points, free throw percentage, three point shooting, and any measure of scoring efficiency, according to WBB State. But the most important thing, as noted a month ago, is that Liston has proven to be more than merely a 3-point shooter.

Of course, Liston did become Duke's all-time leading three point shooter a few games after Gray sustained her injury. But Liston has been responsible for handling the ball more often with Gray out and has done a reasonable job this season, though you'd probably never confuse her numbers for those of an elite point guard. She matched a career-high with 12 rebounds against Virginia and had her third double-double of the season (also a career-high) on Thursday against Clemson. In a one-point win against Miami, Liston had a career-high 29 points. Equally important during that time: Liston is shooting 61.1% in the seven games following the Boston College game.

For those with an eye on the 2014 WNBA Draft, Liston's ability to improve her production and efficiency despite taking on more responsibility is a major positive for her. Where she goes in the draft might depend on team need, but if she can lead this Duke team to a top seed in the tournament and another deep tournament run doing as much as she has done thus far in Gray's absence it will certainly help her draft stock.

With Chelsea Gray's college career officially over due to injury, one of the next questions on people's minds was what this would mean for her future as a professional basketball player.

In his piece discussing that very issue of the potentially devastating long-term effects of Duke star Chelsea Gray's injury, Graham Hays of espnW referred back to quote from Duke's athletic trainer that might help offer some insight into what kind of medical risk WNBA evaluators might consider Gray.

"Her knees aren't the best-looking things in the world," Duke athletic trainer Summer McKeehan said in October. "Anybody who watches her run down the court, her knees are turned in. To me, she doesn't look like an athlete the way you would think. So yeah, she did have some precursors, or precursors for having some knee issues potentially, or hip or ankle. But I think [the dislocation last season] was extremely freak -- the way she landed, what had happened to her knee when she landed -- because she's never had any knee problems before."

Too many times in women's basketball, the first time proves to be only the beginning.

With the expected recovery time for Gray's injury post-surgery at about four months, it's reasonable for a WNBA team to believe that she could return to the court in time to contribute this season. However, the question is whether this is one of those lingering injuries that can rob a talented player of their ability to reach their potential.
