She may have been a bit overshadowed by No. 1 recruit Paige Bueckers of the UConn Huskies, but No. 2 Hoop Gurlz recruit Angel Reese of the Maryland Terrapins received a lot of media hype entering the 2020-21 season. Unfortunately, the right foot fracture she sustained against the Towson Tigers on Thursday is going to keep her out an estimated 12 weeks.
This is a huge blow for Maryland, which lost two star players, Taylor Mikesell and Shakira Austin, to transfer in the offseason; the Terrapins were relying on Reese to make up for those losses.
Maryland still has star point guard Ashley Owusu and Diamond Miller — a wing player with a similar skill set to Reese. Owusu and Miller may be able to hold down the fort for a while and the good news for Maryland is that Reese could be available come the Big Ten and NCAA tournaments.
Reese had 20 points and nine rebounds in Maryland’s opener against the Davidson Wildcats. She then scored 15 points and 16 points in her second and third games, respectively.
Before committing to Maryland, the 6-foot-3 wing from Baltimore also considered playing for the USC Trojans, Syracuse Orange, South Carolina Gamecocks and Tennessee Lady Volunteers.
Maryland is currently 3-1 and ranked fourteenth in the AP poll.
