The No. 1 and No. 3 seeds in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) rose to the top after Friday’s battles in the semifinals.
With a two-point victory on the Ides of March, the No. 1 Southern Lady Jaguars broke the hearts of the No. 4 Grambling State Tigers. Conference scoring leader Shakyla Hill recorded a game-high 21 points. But the Tigers lost because she was the only player to score in double figures for her team. In the win, three Lady Jaguars scored in double figures: Skylar O’Bear (17 points), Alyric Scott (13 points) and Courtney Parson (12 points). But Southern shone brightest on the boards by out-rebounding Grambling State 43-26.
In the second semifinals matchup, the No. 3 Jackson State Lady Tigers toppled the No. 2 Prairie View A&M Lady Jaguars in a double-overtime win for the ages. In the first overtime, the Lady Tigers and Lady Jaguars limited each other to just six points apiece, forcing a second overtime. In the second extra period, Jackson State scored 12 points while holding Prairie View A&M scoreless for the 75-63 win and a ticket to the SWAC title game.
With Jackson State riding the high of yesterday’s win, the Lady Tigers have a chance to topple the No. 1-seeded Lady Jaguars for the title.
