South Dakota State and South Dakota played to double overtime in January, a game which ended in victory for South Dakota, 105-98. Yesterday, the script was flipped with South Dakota State winning in a single overtime over South Dakota, 82-78.
South Dakota got off to a quick start, leading by 11 at the half. The Coyotes shot 48 percent, led by team scoring leader Ciara Duffy who recorded 10 points in the half. South Dakota’s largest lead of the game would come with 9:13 left in the third quarter, at 13 points. The Jackrabbits, however, wouldn’t take their first lead until the 7:38 mark on the game clock.
Chloe Lamb, for South Dakota, had two chances to make a game-winner in the fourth quarter, but was unable to do so.
South Dakota State’s comeback would be an improvement in offense and defense, as the Jackrabbits shot 50 percent while holding South Dakota to 34 percent. Macy Miller and Madison Guebert combined for 32 of the 40 points scored by the Jackrabbits in the second half and overtime. Miller scored eight of South Dakota State’s 13 points in overtime, five of which came from the free-throw line.
Miller finished with a game-high 28 points.
South Dakota State’s win solidifies the Jackrabbits’ lead in the Summit League to 1.5 games over South Dakota, and it is the Jackrabbits’ 12th straight win to put them at improves at 2-2 against top-25 teams. South Dakota State has one regular-season game left — against Western Illinois (Saturday, March 2, Jackrabbits All-Access) — before the Summit League tournament.
If South Dakota State holds on, this will be their first regular-season championship since 2014.
South Dakota’s loss ends an 11-conference game-winning streak. The Coyotes have two Summit League games left — against North Dakota State (Thursday, Feb. 28, ESPN+) and North Dakota (Saturday, March 2, ESPN3).
