It’s a special kind of game when two mid-major conference champions face off, especially after recently having had big outings against Power Five competition. Despite their early middling records, there’s no question that tonight’s meeting between the Horizon League’s Green Bay Phoenix and the Summit League’s South Dakota State Jackrabbits will showcase the best that these teams have to offer, because proving themselves against each other will speak even more highly to how they’ll fare in their respective conference seasons.
While only Green Bay has managed to knock off a ranked opponent this season, beating then-No. 16 Missouri 56-49 on the road, South Dakota State and No. 4 Baylor met in the South Point Thanksgiving Shootout, and the Jackrabbits played Baylor to the very end, only losing 72-66.
The Phoenix have been led offensively this season by Frankie Wurtz’s 12 points per game, and defensively by Madison Wolf’s 7.4 rebounds per game and 6 total blocks. For the Jackrabbits, three players — Macy Miller, Madison Guebert and Myah Selland — are averaging double figures in scoring, while Miller leads in rebounding at 5.8 per game, Guebert leads in three-pointers made at 2.7 per game and Selland leads in assists at 4 per game.
