Carrier Classic to return to USS Yorktown in 2013 despite cancellation of men's game

Despite a somewhat ragged women's basketball game and a cancelled men's game this past weekend, the Carrier Classic will return to the USS Yorktown in 2013, according to the AP.

There were no complications earlier Friday when Notre Dame women defeated Ohio State 57-51 in a Top 25 matchup on the carrier's converted flight deck.

Whalen said the format would remain the same with both a women's and a men's game.

"There are a lot of women in the military, a lot of women veterans," he said. "It's important that we do this."

Condensation on the court led to the cancellation of the men's basketball game between the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Marquette Golden Eagles, as described previously by Luke Zimmerman of SB Nation's Ohio State site Land Grant Holy Land. As Zimmerman suggested, it was probably reasonable to assume that the cancelled men's game would have an impact on the decision to hold another event on the USS Yorktown.

The next big question: who will play? According to organizer Mike Whalen, 10 schools have already expressed interest in participating since Saturday.
