A common adage in open-source development known as Linus' Law states that "with enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow," indicating that if you can get enough people involved, hard problems become easier. This is what open data does for knowledge discovery and innovation. When looking for a needle in the haystack of data, it helps to have a more people looking. The best way to get more people looking is to make it cheap to look. Lowering the cost to look, and thus enabling more people to get involved is precisely what Manchester City has begun to do. Opening the data up promises to lower barriers to entry for experimenting with new data-driven ways of understanding the game. With more eyeballs, this problem can become shallow.

From Make Way for the Soccer Geeks by Alexander Furnas and Gabe Lezra via The Atlantic. The NBA is moving in this direction (and I hope the WNBA will follow in full) but I'm sure you can guess that it's a pretty exciting idea to me. Kudoes to Manchester City.

Defending National Champions Collide - Baylor And Oklahoma City University Meet In Exhibition

+

The NAIA-champion Oklahoma City University Stars will have the first crack at stopping the Baylor Lady Bears' 40-game winning streak. The two meet Oct. 30 in Waco, Texas in exhibition play as the Stars debut a new head coach, Latricia Trammell. In past seasons, OCU has played stiff Big 12 competition in the exhibition season, losing to Kansas State 63-51 and Texas A&M 84-63 in the 2011-12 campaign. In 2010-11, the Stars nearly knocked off Missouri as the Tigers skated away with 68-66 win after a buzzer-beating 3-pointer missed its mark. A trip to Texas A&M was also on the docket in 2009-10 where the Aggies won 84-52.

Washington Mystics sign Iziane Castro Marques and Release Natasha Lacy

+

This is actually a pretty big pick up for the Mystics considering that I didn't think that she'd want to play here and instead maybe play for a contender, but then again she may get more PT here. Izi is a pretty versatile wing player. However, I don't know if her signing is because Lacey wants a playoff push or wants another veteran face who would be part of a mentorship group for the 2013 1st round pick assuming the Mystics get into "Prepare for the Future" mode. I assume it is the former which means bad news for Natalie Novosel....
