Elena Delle Donne’s bulky knee brace (“Iron Knee”) supported her double-double efforts in the semifinals, helping to get the Mystics to their first-ever WNBA Finals in franchise history. In Game 1 of the WNBA Finals, however, the formidable No. 1-ranked Seattle Storm — led by “Masked Legend” Sue Bird — got the blowout victory.
So far, the menacing mask of Sue Bird has proved more powerful in the Finals than the intimidating knee brace of Elena Delle Donne. Backed by a raucous KeyArena crowd in Seattle, the Storm definitely has the edge in Game 2. But what Delle Donne and the Mystics managed to do against the Atlanta Dream in the semifinals should provide some hope that the team can split the series. It won’t be easy, of course, but if the Mystics reduce turnovers and Kristi Toliver returns to Toliverian form, they’ll at least have a chance.
