For WNBA fans who couldn’t keep up with their favorite players’ offseason, overseas play, tonight’s the night to catch a glimpse of some of the greatest to ever play the game as well as a look at some of the fresher-faced upstarts.
USA Women’s National Team Head Coach Dawn Staley and the Team USA selection committee will be looking to see how veteran players come together in the few years since their Olympic victory. But with Layshia Clarendon (Atlanta Dream) and Jewell Loyd (Seattle Storm) on the exhibition roster, Staley is likely assessing a strategy to develop younger guards in preparation for the post-Sue Bird years (whenever that time may come).
This will be Staley’s first Team USA game in the role of permanent head coach.
Breanna Stewart will join her Storm teammates, Bird and Loyd, on the KeyArena court — treating Seattle fans to quite the pre-preseason treat!
Morgan Tuck of the Connecticut Sun, who was originally cut from the team, has been asked back to play in tonight’s exhibition. Tuck will be substituting for an ailing Elena Delle Donne who suffered a neck strain at the start of camp.
