The first day of EuroLeague Women’s Final Four is now complete. UMMC Ekaterinburg will play the hometown team Sopron Basket for continental glory on Sunday.
UMMC Ekaterinburg beats Dynamo Kursk, 84-77
In a battle of Russian PBL powers - and in a preview of next week’s PBL Finals, UMMC Ekaterinburg beat their rivals and the defending EuroLeague Women champs to get a chance to win their second title in the last three years.
UMMC took control of the game after going on a 27-16 run in the third quarter after going into halftime with a 44-43 deficit.
Lynx forward Maya Moore was spectacular, scoring 28 points and dishing 5 assists for UMMC while Dream guard Angel McCoughtry dropped another 26 points and dishing 4 assists for Dynamo Kursk. So that alone was great to see.
Though Moore was the leading scorer for UMMC, Mystics forward Emma Meesseman added 19 points on 8 of 13 shooting, grabbed 8 rebounds, and dished three assists in the win in a game that I would call stereotypical “Meessemanesque.”
Finally, Mercury center Brittney Griner got a dunk in the first quarter:
Sopron Basket beats Yakin Dogu Universitesi, 68-65
Hungarian team Sopron was the hometown team and entered this game as the underdogs against Turkish KBSL power Yakin Dogu. But with homecourt advantage, anything can happen.
Sopron raced to a double digit lead for much of the middle of this game until Yakin Dogu inevitably made their comeback. Their stars like Sparks forward Jantel Lavender, Aces guard Kayla McBride, and Sky guard Courtney Vandersloot all scored in double digits.
Ultimately, the game was tied 65 all until Sopron forward Jelena Milovanovic made the game winning three to give the hometown team a shot for the EuroLeague Women title. You can see the buzzer beater above. Milovanovic scored 9 points while Yvonne Turner scored 19 to lead the way.
