The 2018 WNBA Draft projects to be a talented group on the court this summer. But here are four draft picks from last night’s draft who share some interesting common bonds with family, or in the case of A’ja Wilson, the President of the WNBA.
A’ja Wilson and WNBA President Lisa Borders are part of the same sorority
When Las Vegas Aces center A’ja Wilson posed with WNBA President Lisa Borders, both raised their pinky fingers.

Some people may think, “Oh, they’re just making a cute pose.” But if you went to a college campus and were around fraternity and sorority life, you may know the pinky finger is a pose that Alpha Kappa Alpha (or AKA) sorority members often make.
In other words, Wilson is an AKA from the University of South Carolina’s chapter. Borders is an AKA from Duke University’s chapter. Borders graduated from Duke in 1979 with a B.A. in French according to her LinkedIn profile.
Wilson and Borders are hardly the only famous AKA out there. Rolling Out has a list of more famous members of the first African-American founded sorority.
And going back to the pinky finger, if you want to know the meaning of the pinky finger is to the sisters of AKA, forget it. That’s a secret that only they will know!
Diamond DeShields is part of a famous baseball family

Chicago Sky guard Diamond DeShields has been one of college basketball’s best players in the last few years. But she is part of a famous family in the world of baseball.
Her father is Delino DeShields, who was the 12th pick in the 1987 Major League Baseball Draft to the Montreal Expos, the team that’s now the Washington Nationals. He spent 12 years in the major leagues as a journeyman, but he was a reliable batter (career average of .268) and base stealer throughout his career. DeShields’ older brother is DeLino DeShields, Jr. who was the 8th pick in the 2010 MLB Draft for the Texas Rangers. He has played in the majors since 2015 for Texas as well.
Kia Nurse’s brother is a starting defenseman on the Edmonton Oilers
Like DeShields, Kia Nurse has an older brother who’s well known in his sport. Darnell Nurse is a left defenseman for the Edmonton OIlers, where he is in his fourth NHL season. Darnell scored a career high 26 points (6 goals and 20 assists) in the 2017-18 season, playing in all 82 games. Nurse’s aunt Raquel played basketball at Syracuse and is married to former NFL quarterback Donovan McNabb.
Leslie Robinson is the niece of Former First Lady Michelle Obama
Princeton forward Leslie Robinson was drafted in the third round to the New York Liberty. She is the daughter of former Oregon State men’s basketball coach Craig Robinson. Robinson is Michelle Obama’s older brother, which makes former President Barack Obama her uncle in law.
Robinson averaged 10.3 points, 7 rebounds and 4.3 assists a game last season for the Tigers, where she was named to the All-Ivy League First Team.
