It may be cold this winter, but a warm spot is shining on Connecticut Sun Head Coach and General Manager Curt Miller.
Miller has been selected to serve on the 2017-20 USA Basketball Women’s National Team Player Selection Committee. Throughout his term, he will help choose individuals to participate in the 2018 USA World Cup Team and, should the USA qualify, the 2020 U.S. Olympic Women’s Basketball Team.
“I was truly humbled when I received the phone call asking me to join this prestigious committee,” expressed Miller. “It is an amazing opportunity and a lifelong dream to work with USA Basketball. I look forward to being a part of the selection process over the next three years.”
Additional members of the committee include USA Basketball Women’s National Team Director Carol Callan, University of Connecticut Women’s Basketball Head Coach Geno Auriemma, New York Liberty Head Coach Katie Smith and Los Angeles Sparks General Manager Penny Toler.
Miller will join these members at the USA National Team training camp on February 9-11 hosted at the University of South Carolina, as the team continues to prep for the 2018 FIBA Basketball World Cup for Women on Sept. 22-30 in Tenerife, Spain.
Miller’s coaching in 2017 speaks for itself. He was the selected as the WNBA Coach and Executive of the Year. Miller is starting his third season with the Sun in 2018, and before he joined he spent an impressive 24 years as a collegiate coach, with the latter 13 as a head coach, and securing six Coach of the Year honors throughout that span.
“Curt Miller’s lengthy experience in women’s basketball and his accomplishments this past season with the Connecticut Sun make him a perfect committee member,” said Callen. “We’re happy to have him on board this quadrennium, and his insight will be valuable as we evaluate and select athletes for the USA National Team.”
The USA Basketball Women’s National Team Selection Committee is responsible for choosing the USA National Team pool of players. From that, the 12-member 2018 USA World Championship Team and the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team will be picked. The Connecticut Sun currently have three members in the pool, including Morgan Tuck, Courtney Williams and Chiney Ogwumike.
For six consecutive years, the USA women have won the gold medal in Olympics and captured the FIBA World Cup gold medal in four out of the past five World Cups, most recently in 2014.
