WNBA: NY’s Charles makes history with POW award

This week two familiar faces in the league have been named the Players of the Week.

Today the WNBA announced the winners for Players of the Week for games played July 17-23. Those two players are Minnesota’s Sylvia Fowles for the West and New York’s Tina Charles for the East.

With the honor, Charles not only collects the award for the third time this season, however, the 24th time in her career — a WNBA record.

Last week Charles helped the Liberty to beat Connecticut after erupting for 28 points, 17 rebounds to move within one game of the Sun and Washington for first place in the East. Currently, New York sits at third place in the East, yet sixth in the entire league.

Fowles has been essentially unstoppable this season for the Lynx. Last week against Dallas, she helped Minnesota pick apart the Wings as she tallied 24 points and 12 rebounds in a final score of 100-74.

As teams return to the court tomorrow following the All-Star break, the Lynx remain at the top of the league with the best record right now at 16-2 and the franchise’s best start to a season.
