New Mexico State didn’t think they would be looking for a new coach, but USC fumbled and botched their search, and ultimately, ended up hiring away Aggies head coach Mark Trakh.
After only a couple of weeks, the Aggies have found their replacement. According to multiple Swish Appeal sources, Colorado State assistant Brooke Atkinson will be the next head coach at New Mexico State.
This will be Atkinson’s second stint with the Aggies after serving as an assistant a few years back from 2003-2010, but her first head coaching job. During her first go around with New Mexico State Atkinson helped the team to three WAC Championship games — the first postseason appearance for the university in 16 years.
With her hard work and dedication to the Aggies, Atkinson was promoted to second assistant in 2005 and later won New Mexico State’s Outstanding Coach Award in 2008.
For the past three seasons though, Atkinson has been an assistant at Colorado State. With the Rams, Atkinson helped the team to post- season play each of the three years she was on staff. This past season Colorado State finished 25-9 after being eliminated in the second round of the WNIT.
