Well, it’s official! The Washington Mystics and Elena Delle Donne made the announcement today that Delle Donne would be leaving the Chicago Sky, after four great years of establishing herself as a force in league, and joining the Washington Mystics.
I just got off of a conference call with Delle Donne and Mystics head coach Mike Thibault to discuss this major blockbuster deal and let’s just say that there’s nothing but excitement in the air over in Washington.
“The season truly can’t come soon enough I can’t wait to get started,” said Delle Donne. “Ever since I realized this deal was going to happen I think I’ve had a smile on my face ever since…it’s hard to even put into words how elated I am about this.”
While she’s ecstatic about her move, Delle Donne also reflected on her experiences in Chicago with nothing but happiness and good memories. “I’ll miss the bond and relationship that I built with my teammates and the staff as well, she explained. “I’m sure when we play each other we’ll go out and get dinner after.”
She isn’t the only one excited about the move, though, in fact, her new coach, Mike Thibault, may be the most excited about this huge trade.
“What Elena does for our team… it’s a unique situation. She takes pressure off of everyone else and she can raise their level and they can also do the same for her,” Thibault said. “She’s going be surrounded by a lot of good offensive players where they can take the pressure off of each other.”
Coach Thibault is especially excited for what Delle Donne can bring offensively. “For a coach this is like a dream come true to put together a team with so much offensive diversity,” he said. “I’ve woken up in the middle of the night with new offensive plays in my head.”
The move to Washington for Delle Donne also means being closer to her home and family in Delaware, which is something that means a lot to her. “It’s not a secret to anyone how much my family means to me and to be close to home is very nice but the basketball side of things is what I’m most excited about.”
What about the basketball over in Washington drew her in you may be wondering?
Well, that all has to do with coach Thibault and the atmosphere he’s created. Delle Donne added that she believes the culture could lead to a championship in the near future and wants to make that dream come true. “It’s a goal of mine to bring a championship to this wonderful city,” she concluded.
