After cancer diagnosis, USM head coach takes leave of absence

Southern Mississippi women's basketball head coach Joye Lee-McNelis will be taking a leave of absence after personal health issues. Assistant coach Kiley Hill will step in until McNeils is healthy enough to return.

Hattiesburg, MS — Southern Mississippi women's basketball head coach Joye Lee-McNelis has announced, that she'll be taking a leave of absence from her coaching position, due to her ongoing battle with cancer.

A timeline isn't clear, but McNelis is leaving for personal health reasons, she said.

It was just last week that McNelis was hospitalized where tests revealed that she had a small mass in her lung. She was diagnosed with Adenocarcinoma and will undergo surgery as soon as possible.

Assistant Head Coach Kiley Hill will pick up where McNeils left off temporarily until Lee-McNeils is well enough to return.

Southern Mississippi plays Florida International University on Thursday, and Florida Atlantic University on Saturday.
