Center stage: Historic afternoon for top mid-major Drake

In sole possession of first place in the Missouri Valley Conference, Drake University is coming off its 14th straight victory. After today’s (Feb. 12) win over Bradley, the Bulldogs set a new record for the best start to conference (13-0) in MVC history.

Des Moines, IA — It hasn’t come without a lot of growing pains under head coach Jennie Baranczyk over the last four seasons, but the Drake Bulldogs are blowing through Missouri Valley opponents in year five.

Today, the Bulldogs improved to 20-4 overall and 13-0 in conference, setting the best-ever start to league play in MVC history. This was also Drake’s 14th straight win, just two shy of tying the program’s all-time longest win streak of 16 set during the 1996-97 campaign. The Bulldogs are just one of seven NCAA DI programs right now with a perfect clip in conference action.

Senior Lizzy Wendell also recorded her 102nd straight game in double-digit points this weekend as the team cruised to victory over Illinois State on Friday (Feb. 10) and Bradley this afternoon (Feb. 12). This is the longest streak in the Valley, passing the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer Jackie Stiles at 92.

Wendell and company are coming off NCAA women’s basketball Team of the Week honors and were just a few votes shy of being ranked in the week 14 AP Poll. At this rate, who knows what other noise the Bulldogs will make and what other records they will break as the season winds down.
