A couple weeks ago, Michigan State’s head coach Suzy Merchant collapsed on the sidelines during a game (Jan. 1 against Illinois) and was admitted overnight at a local hospital. Now, the university has announced she will be taking a medical leave of absence effective immediately.
Until Merchant returns — which has not been announced when that will be — associated head coach Amaka Agugua will be the Spartans interim head coach.
Michigan State stated Merchant visited a hospital in New Jersey after her team played Rutgers on Jan. 14 to undergo some testing after she felt similar symptoms from the night she collapsed on the first of the year. While she missed the Spartans’ next game on Jan. 4 she did return to the sidelines three days later against Nebraska.
