Rio de Janeiro — Team USA announced today they will be day to day with starting point guard Sue Bird, for the remainder of the Olympics after she hurt her knee yesterday in the team’s game against Japan.
After an MRI today, the results came back that she had a capsule sprain.
After only playing seven minutes and 50 seconds, Bird left the court for Team USA. During halftime warmups she tested her knee, only to report back to her coaches and medical staff that she felt she could not go.
Yesterday after the game, Bird told ESPN reporter Julie Foudy she heard a pop but was remaining even until she was evaluated.
Spoke w @S10Bird after the game. "Turned & felt pop in my knee. Trying not to get too high or too low. Will get tests tmrw & we'll see."

Today, Bird felt relief stating, “Obviously, I felt a huge relief. The hardest part is waiting and not knowing. So, to finally get the thumbs-up from the doc that everything was okay was incredibly relieving and exciting, and obviously I’m very happy.”
If there can be good news from an injury, this is one of those cases, as she still has the chance to play again in Rio after getting the thumbs-up that it wasn’t a worse injury.
