Executive vice president and general manager, Penny Toler announced the LA Sparks have signed All-Star Essence Carson today.
Carson had shared this in the team's release of joining the Sparks, "I am beyond excited to be joining the Los Angeles Sparks. After spending my entire career in New York City, I felt this change was needed. Competing for a championship with an opportunity to contribute are my priorities and LA fit the bill. Just as the NY Liberty, the Sparks have their own legacy and I plan to uphold that to the best of my ability, as a person and player.
"Thank you for welcoming me to your city and your family."
Carson comes to the Sparks after playing for the New York Liberty. With the Liberty she helped them to four postseason appearances in her right years playing including three trips to the Eastern Conference Finals.
Carson entered the league in 2008 for New York as the seventh overall pick in the first sound. There she started every game on their run to the conference finals; she averaged 16.8 minutes per game and 5.7 points per game in those six contests.
Carson is an eight-year veteran whose career averages are 7.7 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 231 game where she started 119 times in those games for the Liberty. She leaves the Liberty as the franchise's history ranked seventh in career points with 1,790 total.
To date, the best season Carson has had came in 2012when she was averaging career-highs in points (11.6 ppg), rebounds (3.4 rpg), blocks (0.7 bpg) and minutes (27.3 mpg) in 34 games played with 23 starts. In 2011 she was selected to represent the East in the WNBA All-Star Game.
Carson is heavily involved in the WNBA community where she is a two-time WNBA Community Assist Award from State Farm; the most recent time she won the award was in June 2015.
Coach Agler shared his excitement of signing Carson. "We are excited about Essence being part of our team this season. She is playing well and I have always appreciated her ability to play the game with consistency, competitiveness and toughness. She will play a significant role on the team and will boost our efficiency at both ends of the floor."
This is great news for the Sparks who just yesterday received the devastating news their new guard, Riquna Williams would miss the season after rupturing her left Achilles. Carson will bring a force on offense and defense for the Sparks in the guard position which they have needed.
