North Texas' greatest player is coming home to coach the Mean Green. According to Brett Vito of the Denton Record-Chronicle, Mitchell will be announced as head coach on Thursday. Here's a small fraction from the Denton Record-Chronicle:
Mitchell was long considered a leading candidate for the job due to her connections to the school. The former Duncanville standout is UNT’s all-time leading scorer and worked as an assistant coach at the school twice.
Mitchell is currently an assistant coach at Texas.
UNT officials believe that Mitchell’s connections to the school and the success she had there can help her pull the Mean Green out of a slide that has seen the program suffer through nine straight losing seasons under four coaches.
Mitchell will replace Mike Petersen. UNT and Petersen mutually agreed to part ways after last season, when the Mean Green finished 5-24.
Mitchell is in the North Texas Hall of Fame, and has been an instrumental part in the recruiting success of Texas, the past few years.
