Who? The Colonials of George Washington University.
When do they play in the first round? GW plays Gonzaga on Friday, March 20 at 7:30 p.m. ET
What? Voted in as the name in 1928. George's name ought to be self-explanatory.
Where? Washington, DC, that beautiful reclaimed piece of swampland.
Why? They won the Atlantic 10 conference tournament.
How? Jonquel Jones exploded for 16 of her 21 points in the second half, and George Washington pulled away from Dayton late in a 75-62 win. Chakecia Miller added 12 points and six steals, and Caira Washington added 10 points and 10 rebounds. Andrea Hoover's 18 points and six steals weren't enough for the Flyers.
Surprise? Predicted to finish second in the conference, the regular season champions finished a game ahead of Dayton.
RPI: 13
SOS: 67
Record: 29-3 (15-1 A-10)
Good wins: North Carolina State in the Bahamas. I like the regular season sweep of Dayton, too.
Bad losses: At Saint Louis.
Who's in charge around here? Jonathan Tsipis, since 2012, formerly an assistant at Notre Dame and author of some of the better scheduling requests out there.
Extra, Extra! The Washington Post, though I suspect that the GW Hatchet on campus might do a better job. WaPo does love their BCS teams.
Lanky junior forward Jonquel Jones is the star for the Colonials, notching 15.3 points and 12.7 rebounds per game- and she's still developing, which is a frankly terrifying thought. Sophomore forward Caira Washington adds 12.5 points on 52.1% shooting from the field. The duo make up an intimidating front line with a knack for changing shots.
From what I've seen of them, and from the stats, the ability to hit shots worries me. They don't have reliable three-point shooting, their free-throw shooting is suspect, and Jones and Washington have both shown a tendency to miss right at the rim.
