NCAA Women's Tournament Bracket: Dayton Flyers Preview

A strong team with a phenomenal band.

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Who? The Flyers of Dayton.

When do they play in the first round? Dayton will face off against Iowa State on Friday March 20 at 12 p.m. ET.

What? Named after the Wright Flyer; if you've ever seen an Ohio quarter, you know Ohio takes its history of flight seriously. Rudy Flyer gets his name from UD.

Where? Dayton, Ohio, the Gem City.

Why? Hard to leave out top-20 RPIs.

How? They were an at-large selection.

Surprise? Predicted to finish first in the conference, they finished a game behind George Washington.

RPI: 14

SOS: 37

Record: 25-6 (14-2 Atlantic-10)

Good wins: Green Bay. Two wins against Crystal Bradford's CMU are worth noting too.

Bad losses: At Washington State.

Who's running this show? Jim Jabir, since 2003, well-traveled and well-seasoned.

Extra, Extra! The Dayton Daily News.

The Flyers lean on the one-two senior punch of guard Andrea Hoover (17.6 points) and forward Ally Malott (15.3 points, 7.6 rebounds). Junior guard Amber Deane has been a super sub, third on the team in scoring with only three starts to her name.

I find the dynamic interesting- four starters who are either juniors or seniors, and one freshman guard who's primarily a distributor.
