Who? The Lady Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky, the school with possibly my favorite logo.
When do they play in the first round? WKU will play Texas on Friday, March 20 at 5 p.m. ET.
What? They're Hilltoppers because they're on top of a hill. The towel? A coach's prop. Big Red? That's... a really good question.
Where? Bowling Green, Kentucky, where they make Corvettes.
When? March 14th, in Birmingham, Alabama.
Why? They won the Conference USA tournament.
How? The last four of Alexis Govan's 20 points clinched a tournament title for Western Kentucky in their first year in Conference USA. Govan also finished with six assists and seven rebounds in the Lady Toppers' 60-57 win over a Southern Miss team that never surrendered. Chastity Gooch added 18 for WKU.
Surprise? Predicted to finish second in the conference, they were the regular season champions, two games ahead of Middle Tennessee.
RPI: 28
SOS: 135
Record: 30-4 (16-2 C-USA)
Good wins: Whooping Ole Miss.
Bad losses: At UTSA.
Who's in charge around here? Michelle Clark-Heard, since 2012, a former Lady Topper herself.
Extra, Extra! The Bowling Green Daily News.
The Lady Toppers boast a one-two punch the likes of which few schools can claim. Senior forwards Chastity Gooch and Alexis Govan combine for over 35 points and 13 rebounds per game. Point guard and C-USA DPOY Kendall Noble keeps her offense running (4.7 assists) and disrupts the opponent's (3.1 steals).
The biggest worry I see for WKU is keeping Govan and Gooch in the game- each of them has fouled out four times this season, and Western Kentucky can't afford that in the tournament.
