Since the Seattle Storm announced that Team President Alisha Valavanis would also be the team's new general manager, it was only a matter of when she was going to start rebuilding the team toward a younger direction.
On Wednesday, she made her first move, as Seattle acquired the #3 and #15 picks of the draft plus point guard Renee Montgomery in exchange for Shekinna Stricklen and Camille Little.
Given that the Storm is rebuilding, Seattle now has the #1, #3, #15, and #26 picks in the 2015 Draft. The Storm could then use those picks to add more youth to fill in the rotation. Or perhaps they could package the #1 and #3 picks for a more established player. Montgomery's addition helps bolster the guard rotation, and perhaps this may even be a sign that Sue Bird would be playing more at the shooting guard position given her ability to make shots.
The Connecticut Sun have been going through a rebuild since the 2012-13 offseason when they fired former head coach Mike Thibault. While they have suffered in the standings, the Sun had two lottery picks each in the 2014 and 2015 Drafts. With Chiney Ogwumike out for much of the season due to injury, getting an established power forward like Little will help keep their 2015 playoff hopes alive, and Stricklen can also get a fresh start.
We will have more detailed analysis on the trade shortly.
