Mercury vs. Sky, Game 2 final score: Phoenix gets record win against Chicago, 97-68

The Phoenix Mercury picked up right where they left off at halftime to get a WNBA Finals record 29-point win over the Chicago Sky in Game 2 of the 2014 WNBA Finals.

Phoenix shot 66.7% in the third quarter to extend their lead to 24 before pushing the lead to a series-high 31-point lead in the fourth quarter on their way to a commanding 97-68 win to take a 2-0 lead in the series. With a win in Game 3 on Friday in Chicago, the Mercury can sweep the best-of-five series.

There's never really one thing that determines a rout like that, but it's really hard to ignore just how badly Mercury center Brittney Griner has outplayed Sky center Sylvia Fowles in this series. Griner scored 9 of her team-high 19 points in the second half and absolutely dominated the paint - both with her jumpers and by scaring Sky players out of the paint - to lead the Mercury's defensive attack. Fowles scored all four of her points in the second half and was just never a factor despite leading her team with five rebounds

The bright spot for the Sky as they look ahead to Game 3 at home was the play of Elena Delle Donne who finished with a game-high 22 points on 8-for-12 shooting despite concerns about her back limiting her minutes again. Epiphanny Prince deserves credit for bouncing back from a poor Game 1 performance to score 15 points as she looked more aggressive in attacking the paint.

But the problem remains quite simple: the Sky can't get anything going consistently and the Mercury are so balanced offensively that it's almost impossible to shut everyone down. Even playing at their best in front of their home crowd, it's difficult to imagine the Sky avoiding a sweep in this series.
