Yesterday, it was stated that 6-foot-6 Tennessee center, Mercedes Russell, would redshirt the upcoming 2014-15 season after having surgery on her foot earlier this offseason. In the release, it said:

"Mercedes has a history of orthopedic problems with her feet that our sports medicine staff is working to correct," Warlick said. "Redshirting this season will allow her the opportunity to return to full health and still have three full years of eligibility with our program. We look forward to seeing Mercedes back in action next season."

Per Maria M. Cornelius of Inside Tennessee, Russell is scheduled to have another surgery on her other foot in the near future. This surgery will be able to correct issues that she's been having with her toes, a full recovery is expected.

Russell averaged 6.3 points and 5.0 rebounds in her freshman campaign with the Lady Vols. Prior to enrolling at Tennessee, Russell was the top recruit of the 2013 class after helping her high school win its first-ever state championship in Oregon as a sophomore.
