Big South, Patriot League get tourney party started

The post-season in women's basketball started yesterday, with games from Big South and Patriot League teams at the bottom of the brackets.

Yesterday, tournament season officially began with the Big South conference and the Patriot League beginning tournament play.  The whole mess started in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina with the beginning of the Big South Tournament at 11 am EST.

#6 Coastal Carolina 106, #11 Charleston Southern 71. The Chanticleers tied the record for most points in a half during a tournament game (54) and set the record for highest score in a tournament game.  Three Coastal Carolina players finished with 20 or more points.  Senior Coastal Carolina guard Angelica Henry became the first player in Big South Tournament history to score a triple-double in a tournament game. (30 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists.)  Coastal Carolina moves on to a Thursday match-up with #3 Winthrop.

#7 Presbyterian 54, #10 Longwood 40.  Longwood only shot 25.5 percent from the field. The game was tied 36-36 with 7:19 left, but the Blue Hose took a 18-4 run to break the game open.  Presbyterian will advance to play #2 Liberty on Thursday.

#8 UNC Asheville 43, #9 Radford 42. Bulldog junior guard Shonese Jones drove to the basket with Asheville down 42-41 and four seconds left on the clock.  Her drive missed and it was picked up on a rebound by junior forward Leah Wormack.  Wormack's shot missed, Jones got the rebound and put it in with time expiring.  UNC-Asheville moves on to play #1 seeded High Point on Thursday, March 6.

While the Big South players enjoyed some fun in the sun, the Patriot League match-ups take place at the home team of the higher seed.

#7 Boston University 40, #10 Loyola (MD) 35
.  The two newcomers to the Patriot League - this was their first year in their new conference - ended up playing each other.  The Greyhounds got 54 rebounds - fourth best in Loyola History - and sophomore center Tiffany Padgett had a double-double, but the Terriers ended up with their first post-season Patriot League win.  Boston U shot 27.6 percent, and Loyola shot 21.0 percent...and shot 3-for-28 in the second half.  Boston University moves on to play #2 Army on Thursday at West Point.

#8 Lehigh 59, #9 Colgate 49.  When you open the second half on a 28-9 run, good things are going to happen.  The Mountain Hawks move on to play #1 Navy on Thursday at Annapolis.
