Dance Card: Florida Gulf Coast, Atlantic Sun

I'm not 100% sure the "Mighty Ospreys" aren't really Eagles. Soar, soar, soar?

Who? The Eagles of Florida Gulf Coast University.

What? FGCU was founded with a strong environmental bent, so their colors are green and blue, and Azul (whose name means blue in Spanish) is supposed to represent the university's relationship with the environment.

Where? Fort Myers, Florida, or more precisely, just south of Fort Myers.

When? March 16th, in Fort Myers, Florida.

Why? They won the Atlantic Sun conference tournament.

How? Stetson's Sasha Sims forced overtime with ten seconds to go, but Florida Gulf Coast took control in the last five minutes to claim a 72-70 win. Jenna Cobb had 19 points, and Kaneisha Atwater put up 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Surprise? Predicted to finish first in the conference, they were once more the regular season champions.

RPI: 63

SOS: 149

Record:26-7 (17-1 Atlantic Sun)

Good wins: South Dakota State in Mexico.

Bad losses: At Northern Kentucky.

Who's running this show? Karl Smesko, since 2001, 2012 national coach of the year.

Extra, Extra! The Naples News and the News-Press. (I was especially impressed by the Naples News.)

It's bombs away from deep for the Eagles, with 972 attempts on the season at a 35% clip. Senior guard Sarah Hansen leads the way with 13.8 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. Sophomore Whitney Knight holds it down in the defensive post, with 2.7 blocks and 1.4 steals per game to go with her 12.3 points.
