Dance Card: Prairie View, SWAC

A familiar face in a familiar face, but perhaps at an unexpected time.

USA TODAY Sports

Who? The Lady Panthers of Prairie View A&M.

What? It appears to look something like this, but assiduous Googling has produced nothing.

Where? Prairie View, Texas, in the Houston metropolitan area.

When? March 15th, in Houston, Texas.

Why? They won the Southwestern Athletic conference tournament.

How? One 20-point effort wasn't going to be enough to claim the SWAC. Jazz Parker put up 20 for Texas Southern, but LaReahn Washington put up 20 and Jeannette Jackson put up 22 as Prairie View was once more crowned SWAC champions, 63-58.

Surprise? Predicted to finish second in the conference, they ended up in fourth.

RPI: 251

SOS: 294

Record: 14-17 (11-7 Southwestern)

Good wins: They have no wins against out-of-conference teams, so I guess their whipping of Southern in the semifinals will have to be it.

Bad losses: Stephen F. Austin in Houston's tournament. (Though putting up 27 points in a D-I game should count as a bad loss, I don't care that you're playing Texas A&M.)

Who's running this show? Dawn Brown, since 2013, a former Jackson State player.

Extra, Extra! The Houston Chronicle.

I'm amazed that Prairie View pulled it together this year. I didn't think they had the coaching, to be honest, and I didn't think they had enough talent. Perhaps this undermines my credibility about knowing things.

Junior guard Jeannette Jackson leads the way for the Panthers, with 19.3 points and 3.8 assists per game. She's the only consistent double-figure scorer for this team, though senior LaReahn Washington comes close at 9.6 per game. Junior forward Larissa Scott puts up 8.3 points and 8.3 rebounds per game- she has a way of slithering into narrow spaces, though her shooting could use a ton SO MUCH some work.

Prairie View will fight, and will scrap, and will make your life miserable, even though they're down big.
