Who? The Blue Demons of DePaul.
What? A good Catholic university called Demons? It's an elision of D-Men, but they've taken it to heart. DIBS- the Demon In a Blue Suit- represents them with honor and occasional snark.
Where? Chicago, Illinois, site of the world's first skyscraper.
When? March 11th, in Chicago, Illinois.
Why? They won the Big East Conference tournament.
How? DePaul came up with the big shots down the stretch and paced St. John's in a 65-57 win. Brittany Hrynko led the Blue Demons with 15 points, adding eight rebounds and six assists.
Surprise? Predicted to finish first in the conference, they ended up in first, two games ahead of St. John's.
RPI: 27
SOS: 93
Record: 28-6 (15-3 Big East)
Good wins: The out-of-conference schedule is... uninspiring... so I'm going to have to go with the road win at St. John's.
Bad losses: At Northwestern.
Who's running this show? Doug Bruno, since 1988. Just read the bio. He's awesome.
Extra, Extra! The Chicago-Sun Times.
Senior forward Jasmine Penny, one of only three seniors for DePaul, leads four Blue Demons in double figures with 16.0 points per game, getting them hard on the inside. Speedy junior guard Brittany Hrynko (12.4 points, 5.7 assists per game) is the player to watch- or at least the player to draw your attention. She's streaky and she's wild, but she's a firestarter. Keep an eye on freshman phenom Jessica January, too- she's been learning quickly this season.
My personal favorite Blue Demon is Centrese McGee, who's a defensive scrapper and reminds me of archive footage of Jamelle Elliott, hair and all.
