We haven't spent a lot of time discussing Chiney Ogwumike because a) the Stanford WBB Blog does recaps of Stanford games already and b) if you're a WNBA fan, you're probably already aware that she's the consensus top pick. But a recent article by John Reid of the San Jose Mercury News provided a short summary of how good she has been this season for those looking to catch up.
Ogwumike has been a force to be reckoned with, averaging 27.3 points (third in the nation) and 12 rebounds (ninth in the nation) per game. Ogwumike has a team-high 32 blocked shots to go with 28 steals and 30 assists. Ogwumike is the career leader in the Pac-12 in rebounds with 1,337, breaking former Stanford star Kayla Pedersen's conference mark on Jan. 3. Ogwumike's 59.6 career field goal percentage is No. 1 at Stanford. Her career points total is 369 points away from Candice Wiggins, who owns Stanford's and the Pac-12's No. 1 mark with 2,629 points.
"Chiney is awesome, phenomenal," VanDerveer said.
Numbers like that are why UCLA coach Cori Close has "never been so thrilled to hold someone to 21 points" and 15 rebounds, as C&R already described.
She does apparently have one weakness that people have neglected to report: her world stops on Thursday nights to watch Scandal, which is totally understandable.
