There were a lot of good performances in the opening day of the NCAA Tournament Saturday, but Creighton's McKenzie Fujan takes the cake in leading her team to a 61-56 upset win over still NCAA-winless Syracuse.
Fujan entered the game averaging just 9.7 ppg, but exploded for 24 points, her season high. She also had 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Her previous season high was 22.
The Weston, Nebraska junior was 8-for-13 from the field and 6-for-10 from 3-point land. She seemed to hit a crucial basket every time Syracuse tried to get back in the game.
Creighton has been a good 3 point shooting team all season and many speculated that the match-up with Syracuse was beneficial to the Bluejays. They were right.
Creighton has to play Tennessee on its home floor Monday night, but if Fujan can hit 3's at the same rate as she did against Syracuse, she can keep them in the game.
