Who? The Blue Demons of DePaul.
What? A good Catholic university called Demons? It's an elision of D-Men, but they've taken it to heart. DIBS- the Demon In a Blue Suit- represents them with honor and occasional snark.
Where? Chicago, Illinois, the Windy City.
When? March 24th, in Durham, North Carolina.
Why? Good SOS, good record.
How? They were an at-large selection.
Surprise? Predicted to finish sixth in the conference, they ended up in eighth.
RPI: 27
SOS: 10
Record: 21-11 (9-7 Big East)
Good wins: Louisville.
Bad losses: Dayton, in relative terms.
Who's running this show? Doug Bruno, since 1988. How many guys coached a WNBA president?
Extra, Extra! The Chicago-Sun Times.
Hampered for much of the conference season by a knee injury to sharp-shooting senior guard Anna Martin, the Blue Demons have relied on sophomore guard Brittany Hrynko, with 14.8 points and just shy of 5 assists per game; she splits playmaking duties with freshman Chanise Jenkins. Senior forward Katherine Harry is a force in the middle, averaging 8.8 points and 10.5 rebounds. Martin is back and scoring well (15.7 points per game, highest average on the team), but Doug Bruno has been managing her minutes with care, which may become a factor with the quick turnaround of the tournament.
Number that pleases me: junior forward Jasmine Penny's 90 offensive rebounds out of 159. (The 13.1 points may be related.)
Underestimating Doug Bruno's teams is never a good plan.
