Who? The Golden Hurricane of Tulsa.
What? Because Yellow Jackets were boring and Golden Tornadoes were taken. (By Georgia Tech. Who ended up as the Yellow Jackets. College nicknames are a strange, strange place.) Captain 'Cane has one of the odder mascot origin stories I've ever heard.
Where? Tulsa, Oklahoma, the birthplace of Route 66.
When? March 16th in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Why? They won the Conference USA conference tournament.
How?Taleya Mayberry had 25 points, eight rebounds, and four steals as Tulsa pulled away from UCF to win 75-66.
Surprise? Predicted to finish sixth in the conference, they tied for fifth with Memphis and UTEP.
RPI: 103
SOS: 69
Record: 17-16 (8-8 Conference USA)
Good wins: Tulane.
Bad losses: Loyola Marymount in the Bahamas.
Who's driving this thing? Matilda Mossman, since 2011. She came from the high school ranks, but her collegiate experience stretches back to the AIAW era.
Extra, Extra! The Tulsa World.
Senior guard Taleya Mayberry carries the load for the Golden Hurricane, averaging 18.7 points and 3.6 assists per game. Freshman guard Kelsee Grovey is second with 10.5, and has been slightly over her average in conference games. Senior post Tiffani Couisnard has a team high 9.1 rebounds and steal numbers that intrigue me.
