Who? The Jackrabbits of South Dakota State. It is highly recommended that you not mix this SDSU up with the one represented by the Aztecs. Neither side takes kindly to that kind of mistake.
What? Represented by Jack the Rabbit. Somehow that name got the plurality of the vote. Forgive me, South Dakotans, but I am not impressed with your imagination.
Where? Brookings, South Dakota, where they make cheese.
When? March 12th, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Why? They won the Summit League conference tournament.
How? Megan Waytashek had 11 points and 7 rebounds to lead South Dakota State to a 56-53 win over South Dakota predicated on ball control and hitting their free throws.
Surprise? Predicted to finish first in the conference, they finished first, two games ahead of IUPUI.
RPI: 63
SOS: 172
Record: 25-7 (14-2 Summit)
Good wins: Nebraska.
Bad losses: Getting swept by IUPUI.
Who's running this show? Aaron Johnston, since 2000, who decided to stay.
Extra, Extra! The Brookings Register.
Senior guard Ashley Eide leads the Jacks with 14.1 points per game, with sophomore guard Megan Waytashek not far behind at 13.9. Both have over 100 threes attempted on the season, but it's not as big a part of South Dakota State's game as it used to be.
Except for a couple of bad pastings against Villanova and Central Michigan, these Jackrabbits have been able to keep pace with anyone and everyone. It's cliché to say that they've been there before, but Aaron Johnston's been there before.
