Nakia Sanford signs with the Seattle Storm

A 10 year WNBA veteran, the 6-foot-4 Nakia Sanford has played the last two seasons with the Phoenix Mercury, where she has averaged at least four points and three rebounds a game. Before that she played eight seasons with the Washington Mystics where she had her most notable seasons statistically, including in 2007 where she averaged over 11 points and 7 rebounds a game.

This move is not particularly surprising for the Storm position-wise because the team is trying to fill in post depth issues following the team's announcement that Lauren Jackson would sit out the season and that Ann Wauters was cut. However, this move also is consistent with head coach and general manager Brian Agler's approach to team building where he prefers to build with veteran talent instead of with younger players in most circumstances, and it is also somewhat surprising considering that the team needs to add additional younger players who figure to be part of the team for the long term.

Conversely, It is also not surprising that the Phoenix Mercury let her walk. Last week, the team re-signed centers Krystal Thomas and Lynetta Kizer, who provide younger options at the center position. In addition, the team has the #1 pick in the 2013 Draft and will likely draft an athletic post to further shore up that position.
