Games I wish I'd seen on 18 December 2013

Watching North Carolina vs. South Carolina was a real treat, but there were other great games too.

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

Well, we're here a little late but better late than never.

I was fortunate enough to watch the match between #10 South Carolina and #14 North Carolina in Myrtle Beach - for the pertinent details, you'll want to read the Garnet and Black Attack - where South Carolina lost its first game of the season.  The internet broadcast was high quality, putting ESPN3 and WNBA Live Access to shame.  It was also great to get a look at the phenom underclassmen at North Carolina - freshman forward Stephanie Mavunga scored 20 points and 12 rebounds and freshman guard Diamond DeShields scored 17 points in the Tar Heels victory.

But there were other games I'd wish I'd seen:

(9-2) Vanderbilt 89
@ (8-3) James Madison 85 (OT)

* Both teams combined for 47 free throws, with two players on each team fouling out.
* The Commodores shot 23-for-30 at the foul line.
* The Dukes outrebounded the Commodores 45-31.
* Vanderbilt freshman guard Rebeka Dahlman is out for her second straight game after undergoing procedures with a blood clot.
* Vanderbilt was down 73-70 with 1:41 in regulation, but senior guard Jasmine Lister hit a 3-pointer that tied it with over a minute to play.
* A 7-0 run in overtime gave Vanderbilt the win.

(8-5) Mississippi 80
@ #9 Baylor 87

* Both teams shot 38 percent from the field, taking almost the same # of shots.
* The Lady Bears shot 28-for-34 from the free throw line.
* Ole Miss was up late in the game 74-72 until a three point play and a 3-pointer from senior guard Makenzie Robertson of Baylor put the Lady Bears up 78-74.  Mississippi would get within one point but Baylor would seal the win at the free throw line.
* Baylor guard Odyssey Sims scored 39 points - but took 32 out of 74 shots for Baylor.
* Senior Mississippi gard Valencia McFarland came close to a triple-double with 17 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds.
