Games I wish I'd seen: 10 November 2013

Of course, the game that everyone wanted to see yesterday was Duke at California. Nate has reported about it, and I'm going to link to his great article.

The game looked pretty ugly - the Golden Bears shot 32 percent and boy did it show.  As the game went into the second half, there wasn't any real threat to Duke's lead and if you watched it you could be forgiven if your attention started to flag.  Mine did, and I certainly wouldn't put this game in the Top 10 games I've ever seen.  (Maybe Connecticut/Stanford will be better.)

The announcers talked up Duke senior Chelsea Gray a lot.  She led all scorers with 22 points, but if there's a stat I would pull out of this game, it would be Cal freshman Courtney Range.  She only had five points on 2-for-9 shooting, but she led California with 10 rebounds.

And now, the games I wish I'd seen....


Iowa beat Dayton 97-93 in overtime.  This was an upset, as Dayton was ranked #16 in the country.  Iowa junior Samantha Logic hit to tie the game at 90-90 to put the game in overtime after giving up 11 straight points to Dayton late in the game.  Iowa made five of its seven overtime points at the line.

Georgia beat Presbyterian 45-30.  This is only watchable for the humor value.  The Lady Bulldogs only shot 32 percent.  The Blue Hose only shot 20 percent.  Only one player, Georgia sophomore Merritt Hempe, even cracked double digits.  WBBState.com lists Georgia's pace as "excruciating" and this game has been sent to our CIA run prisons across the planet for information extraction purposes.

Richmond beat Miami (FL) 57-50.  Richmond (1-1) lost to Georgetown only by four points on the road just two days earlier, and were undoubtedly happy with the unexpected road win.  It was another miserable shooting game for both teams - 32 percent for the Spiders vs. 31 percent for Miami.  The key to Richmond's win was the 22 turnovers from Miami.  Freshman Adrienne Motley for Miami shot 0-for-6 with five turnovers and two PF in 28 minutes of play.

Ohio State squeezed by Florida Atlantic 91-88.  Only seven healthy players saw minutes for the Buckeyes and two of those players - sophomores Ameryst Alston and Cait Craft - combined for 57 points over the Owls.  Florida Atlantic got to within one point, 86-85 with 1:45 left, but Ohio State hit a pair of three key pointers to lead the game.  Ohio State almost squandered a 29-6 run to lead the game.
