Saturday WNBA Open Thread: New York and San Antonio Look To Avoid Elimination With Games Starting at 3 PM EDT

First Round playoff games continue today with the New York Liberty looking to even the score against the Connecticut Sun, and the San Antonio Silver Stars looking to do the same against the Los Angeles Sparks. Should they fail, they go home. All of today's games are on NBA TV or via online streaming through LiveAccess.

Today, two games are on the docket as we revisit the two matchups from Thursday. Games start at 3 PM ET as the Stars play the Sparks in an afternoon match. In the evening, the Sun plays the Liberty at 7 PM ET.

Game 1

#2 LA Sparks at #3 San Antonio Silver Stars for Round 1, Game 2 of the Western Conference Playoffs, 3 PM ET/2 PM CT/12 PM PT

LA leads, 1-0

Last game, MIP Kristi Toliver dropped 29 points, CP3 dropped 25, and Alana Beard added 18 more to lead the Sparks to a 93-86 victory over the Stars. For the SA, Becky Hammon scored 19, Danielle Adams and Danielle Robinson added 17 and 16 respectively. The big difference for both teams was at the foul line where the Stars only had 11 attempts while LA had 32. Expect SA to play more aggressively to get to the foul line today. A lot more today.

On Thursday, the Sparks played at USC's Galen Center because Batman Live was scheduled that night at Staples Center. Today, the Stars are also displaced from AT&T Center and will play at the adjacent Freeman Coliseum. Why did the Stars lose their homecourt? Because the Red Hot Chili Peppers will be performing at 7:30 PM which was scheduled well in advance of this game.

Mr. Y U No Guy is upset again while fighting for the greater good, but he also likes the Red Hot Chili Peppers too so he is torn and will save his fire for another time. I myself am a fan of some of their songs but am not a super fanatic either. Perhaps some of the players and game attendees may go to the concert afterwards as well so this may be a win-win.

Game 2

#1 Connecticut Sun at #4 New York Liberty for Round 1, Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Playoffs, 7 PM ET/4 PM PT

CT leads, 1-0

WNBA.com | Offical Sun Release on MVP Tina Charles | Montgomery is Sixth Woman | ...and Lawson is Sportswoman of the Year, yet was robbed for MIP | League Series Preview

It wasn't a particularly pretty game, and the third quarter was pretty ugly, but the Sun came up with the W to draw first blood against the Libs, winning 65-60.

The MVP scored 17 points and swatted four shots, but oddly enough had 3 rebounds. Her front court teammate and fellow Olympian Ashja Jones added 10 points, 9 boards, and 4 dimes. As for New York, Cappie scored 14 points and made all eight of her free throws, but was 3-16. Given that the Libs only made 26% of their shots on Thursday (the Sun made 40.9% of their shots), they were lucky to have only lost this game by 5.

Here's to hoping that both teams play a better game overall tonight, and let's see if NY can pull off an upset here to extend this series.

So those are today's games. Enjoy the basketball, and after, the Red Hot Chili Peppers songs in your MP3 and CD collections, or perhaps the concert itself if you're in the Alamo.
