Dance Card: Prairie View, Southwestern

Who? The Lady Panthers of Prairie View A&M.

What? It appears to look something like this, but assiduous Googling has produced nothing.

Where? Prairie View, Texas, in southeastern Texas.

When? March 10th, in Garland, Texas.

Why? They won the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament.

How? Prairie View roared back from a seven-point halftime deficit to claim a 63-50 win over upstart Alcorn State. Latia Williams had 24 points to lead the charge.

Surprise? They were the favorites in the preseason, finishing third in a very muddled SWAC.

RPI (as of 3/10): 225

SOS (as of 3/10): 310

Record: 17-15 (11-7)

Good wins: The OOC options are Rice or Cal State Bakersfield. I... am not impressed. Can I give them half credit for the triple-overtime loss to Louisiana Tech, at least? So they have something out of conference to hang their hat on?

Bad losses: Northwestern State.

Who's running this show? Toyelle Wilson, since 2010. She's a Manhattan alumna.

A very, very young team- no seniors, though the three juniors are all key. Latia Williams leads the way with 14 points and 8.1 rebounds per game, while guard Kiara Etienne is a long-range threat. Their youth sometimes leads to slips in discipline. Freshman point guard Jeanette Jackson is a work in progress, and your intrepid blogger finds her most promising.
