Dance Card: Hampton, Mid-Eastern

Who? The Pirates of Hampton.

What? A very good question to which Googling provides no answer.

Where? Hampton, Virginia, part of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area.

When? March 10th, at Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem, North Carolina; it's where the Wake Forest men play.

Why? They won the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament.

How? Hampton needed a double-double from Keiara Avant (10 points, 12 rebounds), a + 10 rebounding margin, and one last miss from Howard's Tamoria Holmes to hang on for a 54-53 victory; they were led by 14 points and five assists from Jericka Jenkins.

Surprise? Nope. Hampton was expected to finish first and did so.

RPI (as of 3/10): 80

SOS (as of 3/10): 319

Record: 26-4 (15-1 Mid-Eastern)

Good wins: At Boston College is a pretty nice win for the MEAC, even if BC was awful this year. Ditto for at Pitt. Central Michigan on a neutral court might be better than any of those, though.

Bad losses: Coppin State.

Who's running this show? David Six, since 2009. A former military man.

Extra, Extra! The Daily Press

Senior guard Jericka Jenkins is where it all starts for the Lady Pirates. Averaging 14 points and 7.3 assists per game, she's responsible for more than half her team's field goals. Senior guard Choicetta McMillan shoots it from a 36.1% clip from outside to be the team's second leading scorer at 13.6 points per game. Stingy defense is the key for Hampton; they hold their opponents to 46.8 points per game, second in the country. A lot of players are back from the team that took Kentucky to overtime; a complacent BCS team should watch their step.
