Washington Mystics Still Searching for a New General Manager

According to Womhoops Guru Mel Greenberg, the Washington Mystics are apparently no closer to hiring their next General Manager and/or Head Coach.

Should this be a cause for alarm? On one hand, not really, because free agency doesn't start until around February of next year. So in theory, the team probably can wait another month or two to hire the right fit. After all, the Tulsa Shock didn't hire Gary Kloppenburg until January of 2012, which was well into the college basketball season, but before free agency.

On the other hand, yes, it is alarming. The New York Liberty recently hired former Shock coach Bill Laimbeer, someone who may have been on the Mystics' radar. Second, the longer the search appears to take, the less time there will be for the team to scout potential rookies, and make sound moves to improve the team's long term basketball outlook. At its extreme, some already dissatisfied fans might wonder whether the Mystics will remain in Washington as early as next year. If that's where they're going, they probably aren't doing anything.

So, what are your thoughts on the Mystics GM and coaching search right now and the fact that they're apparently no closer to finding their new leader here? While I certainly believe that the team needs to take its time to find the right people to run basketball operations, at the same time, they need to be transparent with the fans on this process. The lack of doing so, especially in light of the last couple seasons in particular only feeds into "worst case" scenario lines of thinking.
