When I spoke with first-year USF Dons coach Jennifer Azzi back in November, she said that one her goals for this season was to be better than last season.
If she keeps that as one of her goals, next season could be better than this one as well: incoming USF freshman shooting guard Jamie Katuna was announced as the Colorado Gatorade Girls Basketball Player of The Year.
With the distinction, Katuna is now eligible for the Gatorade National Player of the Year honor, which Stanford's Pac-10 Freshman of the Year Chiney Ogwumike won last year. Colorado had another relatively recent player of note to win the award too: Baylor Lady Bears wing Melissa Jones.
Interesting side note: perhaps Azzi is developing a recruiting foothold in Colorado - this year she brought in senior transfer Kelly Jo Mullaney who earned an All-WCC honorable mention, the only USF player to be honored with a WCC post-season award this season.
Not a bad start for a new coach.
