Okie Update: Oklahoma State Romps Alcorn State 69-36, Tulsa Downs Oral Roberts 65-57

If you don't follow me on twitter, you might not know that I'm out of my usual stomping grounds of Oklahoma during the biggest football week in the panhandle state - Bedlam. Therefore, I'm obviously not courtside at Gallagher-Iba Arena for the Cowgirls games, or down in Norman watching Sherri Coale's squad, but I can't deprive your lives of a little Okie Update from today's slate!

OSU vs. Alcorn State -

The state had three of their four NCAA Division I schools in action tonight, as Oklahoma State hosted its second game since the tragic plane crash that has left the Cowgirls reeling and down two coaches. My boxscore observation is that the Pokes handily took care of Alcorn State, as they should have, to move to 3-0 on the season. Toni Young, whom Coach Budke maintained was a good kid that just needed a little discipline when he suspended her to start the season, was back in the starting lineup tonight. And apparently playing with a little purpose, drive and determination. She finished with 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting and nine rebounds in 16 minutes. Along with Young, the high marks for the Cowgirls came from Lindsey Keller's 13 points, Kendra Suttles' 10 rebounds and Tiffany Bias' six assists. The Cowgirls emptied the bench with 14 players seeing game action. The OSU defense forced 24 turnovers that led to 29 points and held Alcorn State to 26.4% shooting on the night in the 69-36 win.

Tulsa vs. Oral Roberts -

The Tulsa Hurricane hosted the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles in a battle for the Mayor's Cup. Yes, the Mayor was there to present the Cup and he is actually a somewhat regular women's basketball supporter and a Shock season ticket holder. After a ridiculous first half in which Kevi Luper went for the Michael Jordan - 23 points on 9-of-12 shooting, she went icy in the second. ORU led 29-24 at the break, but let Tulsa go on a 18-2 run in the early stages of the second half before rolling to the 65-57 win. Luper finished with 32 points, seven rebounds and four steals. She was a miserable 2-of-14 from the field after halftime. If you do the maths, that means the rest of Luper's team got just 25 points and no one else reached double-digit scoring. The Golden Hurricane got 18 points from Taleya Mayberry, 17 points and nine rebounds from Chanice Scott and 14 boards from Tiffani Couisnard in the victorious effort.

Oklahoma -

The only D1 off team was OU, who is off for the week after losing to Vanderbilt on Thanksgiving day. Vandy took the 78-66 win over the Sooners to remain unbeaten on the season while handing OU its first loss. Most of the box score looks comparatively similar other than the 12-point loss, and in fact OU outrebounded the Commodores 40-22. The Sooners also committed 24 turnovers in the loss with three players (Aaryn Ellenberg, Whitney Hand and DeShawn Harden) adding five apiece. The leading scorer for OU was Ellenberg's 22 points, including four from long distance. OU's next game comes on Dec. 4, as they play host to Ohio State.
