In a previous post, I brought up the concept of applying the Fibonacci Win Points metric created by Bill James and applying that metric to college coaching. For those who don't remember, Fibonacci Win Points (FWP) are calculated by
Fibonacci Win Points = Wins * (Win Percentage) + (Wins - Losses)
The point of the metric is to demerit coaches whose win totals are padded by longevity, but reward coaches who have high win percentage totals with both factors balancing each other out. Coaches whose win percentage is about 0.618 or greater will find their FWP greater than their total wins. Coaches who have a win percentage of 0.500 will find their FWP equal to half of their total wins, and coaches who don't win at all can even have negative FWP values.
The biggest criticism I've received is that FWP values are heavily dependent on strength of schedule. A coach could schedule nothing but cupcakes before entering conference play. Regardless of the criticism, I'm moving forward by providing the FWP scores for each coach playing in the top six women's basketball conferences - as well as Utah, a future member.
For coaches who have coached a lonnnnnng time it can be very difficult determining the coach's true record against Division I competition (we have to have some standards somewhere). Andy Landers started at Roane State. Was that a Division I school back then? No, it was a community college, so his Roane State totals are removed. There will be a notation in the "Legend" column that the total is limited to Division I if there's any question. In many cases, determining which schools were Division I schools way back when is almost impossible, so if you note any errors, cry out.
Here is the list in order of descending FWP:
