"I could not be more excited that Justine Hartman has decided to join the Cal Women's Basketball family," Gottlieb said. "In Justine, we are getting a skilled, strong, smooth and versatile post player with a high basketball I.Q. and a desire to be an elite student-athlete at the next level. She will be an important piece of our front-court and I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to coach her. Justine seemed like the perfect `fit' from the moment she stepped on campus and my staff and I are thrilled that she's now a Golden Bear."

Cal Women's Basketball vs. Washington St. Gamethread - California Golden Blogs

That Cal has lost games to Washington and Washington St. isn't in and of itself shocking - it's how they've lost them. All three have come by 9 points or more and in each game Cal's opponents have jumped to large, quick leads that the Bears never recover from. So, can the Bears turn things around, or will they complete what would be a completely unfathomable 0-4 run against what's quickly becoming my least favorite state?

In what areas do the Bears most need to improve heading into conference play? Turnovers, turnovers turnovers. Cal isn't going to be a spectacular shooting team, but their defense and rebounding is good enough to stay with just about anybody as long as they hold on to the ball. When Cal turns it over two things happen. Obviously, we lose a chance to score, which is really important for a team that depends on offensive rebounds and sheer volume shooting. But more importantly, it gives opponents the opportunity to score in transition. When Cal's defense is set it's pretty good - we shut down Texas A&M in the halfcourt. But when teams run on us we struggle. From Women's Basketball Q&A With California Golden Blogs - Rule Of Tree

What makes this team so exciting is that with such extreme youth also comes talent. Ten of the Twelve players on the roster come from back-to-back consensus top 15 recruiting classes, a feat that only Cal, Stanford, Texas A&M and Tennessee can claim over the last two years. The first class showed their ability quickly, making up 80% of Cal’s starting lineup by the end of the season. If this year’s freshmen can have a similarly successful impact Cal could make some serious noise nationally a bit earlier than expected.

- Norcalnick of CaliforniaGoldenBlogs from Part 2 of their women's basketball preview that includes a player-by-player breakdown of the team. Unfortunate news: "Avigiel Cohen reinjured her knee and is expected to red-shirt this year." Read more at California Golden Blogs.

First Look: 2010-11 Cal Women's Basketball Recruits

Think Cal is done after losing Alexis Gray-Lawson? Think again. This is just the beginning. From SBN's California Golden Blogs (link above): "Afure Jemerigbe, Lindsay Sherbert, Mikayla Lyles and Avigiel Cohen should all get a chance to contribute next year. The Bears only have three returning guards/slashers on the roster, and Coach Boyle has shown a preference to play three at once along with two post players. It should be another exciting season of young players learning on the court, as Cal will carry an amazing ten true freshmen or sophomores in addition to seniors Rama N'diaye and Rachelle Federico. I'm going to try to give you an idea of what each player may be able to contribute in the 2011 season."
