Game I wish I'd seen on Thanksgiving

Brendan Maloney-USA TODAY Sports

There were only 12 NCAA DI women's basketball games on Thanksgiving that family plans prevented me from following.

Typically, you wouldn't want to get too excited about a draft prospect at this time of year.

The strength of schedule is just all over the map, which enables players already in that conversation to put up ridiculous numbers.

But when a player is doing what Chiney Ogwumike is doing it's hard not to take notice: she's dominating the teams you'd expect her to dominate, but it almost doesn't seem to matter who she's playing against with the way she's playing right now.

So we'll start with Stanford.

Stanford handles South Dakota State, 80-60: Chiney Ogwumike has averaged a double-double for the last two seasons so I guess it's not even really surprising to see her do it again with 29 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. Still the question moving forward for them, as coach Tara VanDerveer has noted several times now, is who will give them consistent help: outside of Ogwumike's 12-for-17 performance, the rest of the team shot 40%.

Tennessee beats Virginia, 76-67: Meighan Simmons must be sick of me and the guys at Rocky Top Talk dogging her for her scoring efficiency: she dropped 32 points - including 8-for-17 3-point shooting - on Virginia. I sort of lurked on Rocky Top Talk's game thread and apparently Mickey was upset about some of the fouls being called.

North Carolina routs Arkansas State, 93-60: There's been a lot of talk about freshman Diamond DeShields over the last few years and she scored an (early) career-high 24 points against Arkansas State yesterday. Arkansas State apparently didn't put up much of a fight, but DeShields is clearly an impact freshman to follow.

Syracuse beats Texas, 77-65: This one caught my eye mainly because I couldn't figure out why 6-foot-7 Imani McGee-Stafford played so few minutes in a game in which she only had one foul and no reports of injury. With McGee-Stafford playing a season-low in minutes (17) and senior Chassidy Fussel scoring a season-low 3 points, it was a tough outing for Texas. Paradise Jam games are being streamed and you can actually watch the full game on YouTube.
